Recently NJR Plumbing Group replaced some old galvanised pipes with copper pipes at a property in Brisbane. Galvanised Pipes are very common in older properties and corrosion is very frequent in galvanised pipes and they lead can cause low water pressure throughout the property. There are some potential health concerns if the water supply is corrosive due to its acidic condition (low pH).
The concern is not for zinc or iron that may be leaching from the pipe, but for lead and especially cadmium, two other heavy metals that may be present as impurities in the zinc used for the galvanizing process.
Corrosion may cause the leaching of contaminants that can be a health concern. The main contaminant of concern is lead. The picture that you see is the pipe that was taken out of the property, the lady at the property couldn’t believe it and was very concerned that her drinking water was coming out of this pipe!
If you are worried and would like your property checked or the pipes replaced please contact us today!
